Potty training can be a challenging time for children and parents. Inevitably there will be accidents and way a parent handles this can make the difference between a good day and a bad day in the life with a toddler.
In this article about pooping in the potty, a parent struggles with finishing the potty training process because their toddler still eliminates poop at night in a diaper.
A few nights ago, however, she pooped in the potty right before bedtime and she was so proud. We cheered for her and rewarded her with a small Halloween pack of M&Ms, but then she had a second larger BM in her diaper that night.
I just don’t know why she won’t poop in the potty. We tried to be gentle in our approach to toilet training; we read several kid-friendly books on the subject to her, and we waited until she told us that she was ready to be trained. Because our son is due in the spring, we didn’t want her to have to make more than one big adjustment at the same time.
Some parents resort to bribery with candy, but the tried and true practice of consistency in reminders and positive specific praise about what went right in the potty training process goes a lot further than a trail of M & M’s.
If you want to reward your child or dangle the carrot, make the reward something extra special like a big girl tricycle or something that represents a new responsibility or freedom to go with the monumental milestone of potty training.
