Teaching your child to use the potty is not an easy thing to do, and many parents are willing to try anything and everything to finally get their child out of diapers and using the toilet independently. Perhaps one of the most controversial of motivations is the use of potty training rewards. Some people do say that this is the equivalent of bribing their child, and they will not encourage any type of behavior through a bribery system.
Other parents, however, are desperate to try anything to get their child to go to the bathroom on the toilet. The truth is bribery or not, many parents have found potty success through the use of various potty training rewards. So which ones work? Some parents have had great success when using a stickers on a potty training chart. The child gets a sticker on the chart each time he or she uses the toilet, and once they fill up the line with stickers, they get a big prize. Some kids respond well with this, but for other kids, the payoff is too far in the future for them to see the benefit of it and sight of the goal is lost easily.
Other ideas for potty training rewards may be giving the child a sticker to wear each time rather than putting the sticker on a chart, or as an equivalent, giving the child a piece of candy. There are other ideas, too, such as buying the child a small toy if he or she stays dry for a week, or even a bigger reward, such as a trip to the zoo or something similar when he or she is fully potty trained. The secret to a successful use of the reward system is to find a prize that you child truly wants and is willing to work for.
