When potty training, regression can be as regular for your child as them wanting a glass of water at rest time.

Regression usually happens immediately after a major accomplishment. Your little one finally went to the bathroom on their own. Once. And now, they can’t even seem to make it to the potty in time, much less tell you they have to go.

This can be frustrating, but if you know it is likely to happen and prepare with what to do when it does, your frustration levels can stay around the normal range.

Potty Training Regression – Two Steps Back

Potty training regression is like taking one step forward and two steps back, except these steps back usually make a mess on your floor and seem to happen at the most inopportune times. Taking two steps back might actually be a good thing. When you back up, you get a better view of where you were. This time can be used to re-evaluate the way you were potty training your child and give you insight into what you might need to do differently.

Potty Training Regression – Locate the Breakdown

With regression, there is always a breakdown. Somewhere, something isn’t working the way it should be. When potty training problems happen, you have the unique opportunity to find the breakdown, figure out a solution and move forward. Finding the breakdown lets you see if your course was on track and if not, adjust your sails.

Potty Training Regression – Regaining Ground

Once you have taken the steps back, determined the breakdown and adjusted your course, it is time to regain ground. Potty training regression doesn’t have to be painful. Go with the flow and keep moving forward. As you regain ground, continue to evaluate your position, search for problem areas and start down a different course.

You will be back on track with a potty trained child in no time!

You can do it, we know you can!
