Is potty training for girls different from that of boys? You might think gender does not play a role in toilet training, but the truth is that it does. Address gender-specific needs so you can get your little girl into clean pants the soonest. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Don’t Let Your Daughter Wear a Skirt or a Dress – You’re probably thinking not having pants to pull down makes training easier, but you’re wrong. In reality, skirts and dresses are difficult to hold in both the front and the back. Moreover, skirts usually droop in the potty, thus frustrating your toddler who pottied correctly but ended up with wet clothes nonetheless.

Leggings and tights should be avoided, too—it’s difficult for children to pull them down.

2. Teach Correct Potty Posture – When it comes to potty training for girls, you may think urine spray isn’t a problem, but the fact of the matter is that girls have this problem, too. It’s because girls sit on the potty with the pelvis tilting forward. Teach your daughter to sit straight, with her knees together and her bottoms tucked underneath her.

3. Demonstrate How to Wipe – One of the most important differences between potty training for girls and boys is that girls are more prone to UTI or urinary tract infections. Show your daughter how to wipe after bowel movements. Wiping direction should always be from the front to the back.
