Every child is different and no set of potty training examples could ever be complete enough to cover all the bases, but the following potty training examples present a range of our students spanning the easiest to most difficult.

Names have been changed in each potty training example to protect the innocent!

Potty training example #1 – Max: We knew our son had control over his urine when at twenty-two months he stood with a grin, hands on hips, and designed a natural fountain for our bath tub. From that moment we knew it was time to make a transition to the toilet. He went to the restroom with Daddy at every opportunity.

Research shows it takes boys longer to differentiate the sensations of #1 and #2 than it does for girls. This held true for Max. Nonetheless, if you find them searching for a quiet corner as they squat, they are certainly ready for a receptacle.

Potty training example #2 –  Anthony: At two years and two months, Anthony took off his diaper and told us he was dirty.Well then, let’s put it in the trash can and get some underwear on you, we said. As with Max, success with #1 was immediate, and issues with #2 were over in less than a week.

When you find your child searching for a cozy corner and a bit of privacy, it is a clear indication that their favorite spot should be moved to the restroom. If they have an accident, keep it clinical and include them in the clean up.   This reinforces their accountability and helps to speed along the process.

Potty training example #3 –  Ashley: At a little more than two years of age, Ashley was ready for underwear. Her parents were not.   She was staying dry all day at school, but arriving to school in wet diapers. This was a frustrating cycle that did not conclude until we finally bought Ashley some underwear, kept her dry, and sent her home. The next day she showed up to school in underwear and continued to wear them from that day forward.

Ashley wore a pull up with underwear over the top during sleep. This is normal and perfectly acceptable. After a couple of weeks of rising from rest time happy and dry, Ashley lost the pull-up altogether and instantly felt like the biggest kid on the block. Everything within Ashley’s control was seamless.

Potty training example #4 –  Tanner: Tanner was trained almost exactly at the two year mark. He rose from rest as dry as the Mojave and went to the bathroom whenever asked. We included him with the older boys during restroom breaks even though he was still in a diaper. Encouraged to follow the older boys, Tanner evolved naturally into underwear with only a couple of minor oops.

We had Tanner since he was 3 months old, and never allowed him the opportunity to feel comfortable being wet or dirty. He saw us flush his waste, and we changed him standing up. We mentioned to his mommies that they  might consider trying underwear. Pull-ups were skipped and we cut to the skinny. Tanner’s liquids were monitored and we asked him to eliminate regularly until he internalized a natural schedule.

At two, Tanner would excuse himself from activities to take care of his needs as is expected from all of our students.

Each family is different and the correct method is the one that is right for you. The common thread through every success is clear and consistent communication. Children often understand and are capable of far more than they are given credit for. Successful potty training starts with communication, followed by realistic expectation, and concluded by steady triumph.
