Reaching the inevitable potty training milestone is paramount for both parents and their children.
Most parents in America potty train their children from somewhere in between the time of eighteen months to three months of age. But if you have a child with special needs such as Autism, this can be an especially challenging or scary step for both you and your child. Fortunately, there are many effective strategies that the modern parent can use when potty training to help their Autistic child see better results in less time. One of these strategies is through the use of social stories.
If you have a computer, you can look through your ClipArt file for images. Put the images in order they way you plan to teach the toileting routine to your child. Keep your sentences short and simple. Read the story with your child each day prior to beginning training. For children with hypersensitivity issues, you may want to read the book daily for at least a week before you attempt potty training to get them mentally ready for the task.

Establishing a positive potty training habit isn’t easy, and with an autistic child using simple narratives, pictures and mapping out the story of what will happen helps the child get ready and make an association with elimination, staying dry and cleaning up.
Making sure your goals are filled with encouragement, being loving when they make mistakes, and sticking with it (no matter what!) are the golden keys to success.
