Today’s guest post is from writer and cartoonist, Blogger Dad (aka David Wright). While he drew all the art for Potty Training Power and designed this web site, this is his first experience with actual potty training.

He and his wife will be using the Potty Training Power System with their two year old son, E. All this week, he will share his potty training adventures right here in a four-part guest series of guest posts.

DSCF0289On Saturday, my wife got an early start on potty training. Let me rephrase that, she got an early start on our two year old son, E’s potty training.

We’d bought an Elmo potty seat to put over the toilet seat a while ago because my son loves Elmo. He’s sat on it a few times, but never really did much. One time, I put his hand in some warm water and he peed in the toilet, which was the first official potty moment, I suppose. However, because my wife wasn’t there and I coaxed him with water, I’m pretty sure there’s an asterisks next to the feat in whatever historical records we’re keeping of baby firsts.

We aren’t officially starting potty training until Monday (today) as we wanted to read Potty Training Power in its entirety before starting. However, my son has been pressing us to use the Elmo seat. Who knew a kid would want to potty train? Actually, I don’t think he wants to potty train as much as he wants to sit on Elmo. So, on Saturday, my wife put E on his special seat with a book and waited for him to make some magic. After a few minutes, nothing happened. She left the room to get something.

A minute or two later, she returned to see him standing at the toilet and smiling a huuuge smile!

“I went pee!” he proudly exclaimed pointing down.

She looked in the toilet but didn’t see anything. She asked him where and he pointed again…

at the floor!

Yes, my son has given proof to the stereotype evidenced on wet bathroom floors in public restrooms across the country - most men can’t aim.

While he might be a typical boy, he is atypically clean. He ran and grabbed a towel and started cleaning up his mess while saying, “diiiiisgusting” and making a sour face. My wife soothed him and said, “it was an accident, it’s okay.”

He looked at her and asked, “okay?”

And she said yes and hugged him.

So begins our potty training adventure. I’ll be posting here all week. Wish us luck!

Congratulations on ditching those diapers. This a great first day testimony. Cheers on the Elmo seat. No worries on bad aim, he’ll get the part that he needs to keep his legs together if he is sitting until he starts taking aim like the big dogs. Good on ya Daddy and Mommy! “E” we are so proud of your new first steps. “Atta Boy!”

Well, It’s certainly the intent that’s important and if he’s interested you’re on your way!

We found the toughest part of the process for both our kids was post potty honeymoon. Initial interest, then not so much. Letting it happen and avoiding the parent potty push got us through that period.

As for aim: keep some Cheerios handy and drop ‘em in when he’s at bat. (Might be more useful later.)

We must be raising the same two-year-old…at least they’re little puddles on the floor, right?
