Though most of the world seems to agree that children can be easily potty trained prior to the age of two, and that waiting until later only seems to render the potty training process as more difficult, most of us here in America don’t see the thousands year old truth.
In this article, Toilet Training Is A Tricky Business, Julie Deardorff explores the question:
For the first year, babies can’t control bladder or bowel movements. So while they may learn to associate the toilet with elimination, the parent is really the one who is being trained. Pediatrician Ari Brown likens it to teaching a four-month-old to walk, something that children are developmentally ready for around 12 to 15 months. “Parents are also welcome to try toilet training earlier than age two, but the odds would be that success would not happen any earlier and just means a longer duration of work for the parent and potential frustration for the child,” says Brown, co-author of Baby 411.
Many American parents are behind the worldwide potty training curve, but I believe it’s only a matter of time before this trend is reversed.
