While your child is in diapers, there is a loving, bonding relationship, but once you begin to reach the age of potty training, a certain adversarial relationship begins to build up. You want your child out of diapers, and they may not be ready yet. Children and potty training is a difficult time for both child and parent and one that requires a great deal of patience and as much knowledge as you can find.
Perhaps the first key to determining if your child is ready for potty training is if they are showing interest in it. Do they talk about going to the bathroom? Can they recognize when they have done it or better yet, when they are about to? This intimate understanding of the feelings in their own body is the key to successful potty training.
Children and potty training both work on their own schedules and just because you had one kid who was easily potty trained certainly does not guarantee that the next time around will be easy, too. You should also not be in competition with the other kids in your neighborhood or your family. By putting this kind of pressure on yourself and your child, you will only be doomed to fail.
Remember that children and toilet teaching both take time and need to be cooperatively worked on, at a leisurely pace. There is no hurry, despite the fact that you may be sick and tired of changing diapers. By taking your time and starting the potty teaching process at the right time, you will have a far more successful outcome and begin to develop a child who is independent and full of self-confidence. By starting too early, you will only make them feel like a failure, you will get frustrated, and it will not help build a relationship between the two of you.
